It makes sense to use a number that's supposed to be unique. It's a bad idea to make meaningful numbers globally visible. The only time I've changed a MAC address was when the NVRAM battery on my Sparcstation died. Now all my Sparcs have MAC addresses starting with C0:FF:EE. :)There's stuff above here
