Part of the problem is with the security bugs involved with the preview pane.
IIRC, infected e-mails can be activated just by being read in the preview
pane, and are not just activated when fully-opened for read. Part of the
behavior you're seeing may be related to how the Outlook "engine" may now
display the message in the preview pane to prevent an infected payload's
activation.

Regardless, it's a good reason for more hate.
