In my experience, it's because the touch screen (or buttons) are on the
surface of the ATM, but the display is covered by about three feet of
glass, so every person who isn't exactly the same height as the aligner
gits a misaligned screen.

I used a Bank of America touch screen the other day.  It told me it was
memorizing my settings, which seems an interesting approach to not having
to constantly tell it I speak English.  It remains to be seen whether this
new feature is hateful or not.
