I have to say, it really is worth changing your XTerm/RXVT/Whatever settings
so that these colors appear correctly.  That way at least you won't be
squinting while you're trying to fix it.  The snippet I sent should suffice
to at least make any colors readable on a dark background.

Come on now, if documentation just told you what you wanted to hear (which
is usually "how do I disable this crap?), it would be a lot shorter and a
lot more useful, and that just wouldn't do.
