No, it's a directory. It's not a symlink. It's "the name of the current 
directory". Having an actual string that's "the name of the current 
directory" is critical, and having it be a regular directory entry 
means you *don't* need to come up with a bunch of special case rules in 
all your programs...

I've used systems that fake this stuff, and they're a lot more hateful.
