It adds N-1 spaces, but still removes the period.

Oh, I strongly suspect they have a horrible rat's nest of code. It's  
the vertical market syndrome again.  "We're just going to keep  
dragging along our code because it's too much trouble (i.e cost) to  
rewrite, so we'll just keep patching and patching it. And if you  
don't like it, too bad."
