In my shell config, I have:

  function keyview() {open /System/Library/Components/KeyboardViewer.component/Contents/SharedSupport/KeyboardViewerServer.app/}
 
  function charpal() {open /System/Library/Components/CharacterPalette.component/Contents/SharedSupport/CharPaletteServer.app/}

I haven't tried the AppleScript solution, but surely this is faster, since it
avoids AppleScript.
