I just tried to install the Java plugin for Mozilla. Clicking the "download plugin" button in the dialogue box that appeared to tell me I didn't have the plugin, I was taken to <http://wp.netscape.com/plugins/jvm.html>. Rather than providing simple links to download the installers, this page uses form buttons with some shitty JavaScript. That didn't work when I tried it. So I viewed the page's source, which told me I needed to get <ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape6/english/6.2.2/unix/linux22/plugins/jre131_02.xpi>. After a long time a dialogue box finally appeared and asked me if I wanted to install, yadda yadda yadda. I said I did. It sat around for a while and eventually told me permission was denied to install. So I tried again as root, and it said "Installation successful". Wrong! Running Mozilla showed no sign of the plugin at all. Running it from the command line said the Java plugin couldn't be initialized because it was missing a shared object file. Thanks to packages.debian.org, I managed to locate and install an obsolete package called libstdc++2.9-glibc2.1, which is something to do with an old compiler. As if I needed, or wanted, to know that. And as if that wasn't bad enough, running Mozilla again I notice that - all my bookmarks have been deleted!
