Because all web-connected machines must be named "www" and you can't have www2.mycompany.com and www3.mycompany.com on different continents if you want to load-balance. (Or, relatedly, www.mycompany.com, www.mycompany-uk.com, www.mycompany- japan.com, www.mycompany-us.com etc. instead of using subdomains, different hostnames, or path components.)
