In a default NetBSD install on i386 using sysinst, the installer creates 2 filesystems / and /usr. Some static linked utilities are put in /bin under the theory that they can be used for basic repair. A while back I decided to make the /usr partition part of a ccd, and used /bin/pax to back up /usr with the -z option. Then I added the extra disk and created the ccd. When it came time to restore /usr, I learned that with -z, /bin/pax exec's /usr/bin/gzip. doh.
