If you don't want Photoshop, Other Icon Editors are available. Costs may vary. You're right, though. There's no general simple image editing software, just like there's no general simple audio editing software, with the OS. If you want to record a sound from the internal microphone, the way I've seen that you're recommended to do this is open iMovie. Whilst a good demonstration of lateral thinking, it's pretty rubbish. Oh, on the subject of having to use iApps, why can't Quicktime export as MP3? Why do you have to save as movie, load it into iTunes and convert to MP3? (Well, probably licensing fees, actually.
