Sometimes their JavaScript input validation is just to prevent users from making trouble for themselves by entering data that the software won't parse, or something. There's not always a security implication for input validation. Using it to protect users from themselves strikes me as legitimate, though that's unfortunate since I loathe JavaScript. And I'd rather that their back-end software just be smarter, so it doesn't really save them from hates.
