Given that they *still* haven't provided a way to get to the next message when you're viewing a message in its own window, I don't think we're going to be seeing any new "non-sexy" features in Mail.app. ISTR that some people were writing a clone with things like these fixed. Not sure what state it's in, as I haven't looked at it in about eighteen months.
