Fink is a long way from perfect, but so far it seems to be about the best of a bad bunch. I still build plenty of things by hand, but with the sheer number of dependencies that any GUI application has these days it's useful to let Fink take care of the basics (all the gtk+ and gnomeish things, for example) in advance. Oh, and ports ain't perfect either. It's quite possible to get into a mess with them, too. Remember: it all sucks. MattThere's stuff above here
