You'll notice it was one of the first libraries they bolted on. In fact, I've listed "trivializing I/O" as one of the "language design regrets". See also Java. Anyhow, I would not hold up C's I/O system as an example to be followed by HIGH LEVEL LANGUAGES. C, being just a smidge above assembly, is a bit of an exception to the rules.There's stuff above here
