Plug a USB keyboard in and run a USB endpoint or HID explorer and look at all the funky stuff they do. I'm not sure how PS/2 keyboards do it, but it does seem to be out of band data and not keycodes... even when I look at the keycode stream at a fairly low level it never shows up.
