Currently i am abroad. I rented an appartment. The only possibility for me to get Internet-access is paying an enourmous amount of money for a WIFI-hotspot. The DNS at this hotspot sucks. My Windows-laptop tries to access the Windows Domain Controller during startup. The A-record for this host is only know on our intranet, so the laptop should get a NXDOMAIN from the DNS. Usually. With this hotspot, everything is differently: 0.040017 192.168.10.2 -> 217.172.186.24 DNS Standard query A ww200.siemens.net 0.089554 217.172.186.24 -> 192.168.10.2 DNS Standard query response A 0.0.0.1 0.000000 192.168.10.2 -> 0.0.0.1 ICMP Echo (ping) request 1.109446 192.168.10.2 -> 0.0.0.1 ICMP Echo (ping) request 2.110852 192.168.10.2 -> 0.0.0.1 ICMP Echo (ping) request 3.112307 192.168.10.2 -> 0.0.0.1 ICMP Echo (ping) request 13.152326 192.168.10.2 -> 0.0.0.1 ICMP Echo (ping) request 15.630218 192.168.10.2 -> 0.0.0.1 ICMP Echo (ping) request 17.633157 192.168.10.2 -> 0.0.0.1 TCP 1330 > 445 [SYN] Seq=0 Ack=0 Win=16384 Len=0 MSS=1460 17.636066 192.168.10.2 -> 0.0.0.1 ICMP Echo (ping) request 19.636028 192.168.10.2 -> 0.0.0.1 ICMP Echo (ping) request 20.627356 192.168.10.2 -> 0.0.0.1 TCP 1330 > 445 [SYN] Seq=0 Ack=0 Win=16384 Len=0 MSS=1460 21.639022 192.168.5.2 -> 0.0.0.1 NBNS Name query NBSTAT *<00><00><00><00><00><00><00><00><00><00><00><00><00><00><00> (ad nauseaum...) Windows can't cope with this. It becomes so confused that the whole boot-procedure locks up. I have to unplug the network-cable (going straight right to my Linux-laptop which does the Ethernet->WIFI gateway) in order to get Windows booted at all. I hate clueless DNS-admins. They shall suffer of great pain and die a horribly death.
