Markdown (yes, yes, I’m cheerleading) has a simple solution: anything indentend as a code block is literal. Period. Even Markdown syntax itself. It doesn’t matter. You indent it by 4 spaces, it’s literal. (This works in conjunction with other block formatting constructs, ie if you have a quote char and 4 spaces at the start of the line you’ll get a blockquoted code block.)
