It currently does that for me in Firefox.  It didn't used to, and I'm
not sure exactly what I did to make it change.

Does Ctrl+W behave itself in textboxes in other GTK+ applications (a
'Save As' dialogue box of almost any Gnome app, for example)?

If not try putting this line in ~/.gtkrc-2.0:

  gtk-key-theme-name = 'Emacs'

Firefox should pick that up and follow suite.
