I think one major reason PHP "won" is that it's so stupidly easy that it allows bad programmers to write web apps that, although horribly ugly, at least work (in some sense of the word). With PHP, "there's always more than one way to do it" holds true, but in this case, that usually means a few decent ways and then a whole bunch of really, really hateful ways which all happen to be much easier than the decent ways.There's stuff above here
