Apple Mail

Am I not getting any new messages because there are no new messages or 
is my mail server broken? Who knows?

The only way to tell in Apple Mail is to hit the "Mailboxes" button and 
look at the top right of the pop-out. If there's a tiny white on light 
gray warning triangle you can double click on it and it will tell you 
that your server is broken.

If I was designing a piece of software that checked email and I 
couldn't connect to the specified server I'd make it pop up a dialog 
box and tell the user. That's the sort of thing I like to know.
