it worked.  I gave it another half a day and apple disk util was happy
with it too.

so... less hateful.  but I just installed 10.4 (or whatever the fuck the
new one is) and it's already playing music and flashing animations at
me.  I just had two molars extracted under general anaesthesia last
friday and am still in an incredible amount of pain even with the
hydrocodone, and am not in the mood for fast-moving socket-fucking
spinny animations right now.
