I too hate screen's key-stealing behavior. I tried remapping the key to
various different letters, but never found a place for it that didn't
get in the way at the worst possible time.

So now I use dtach, which has no runtime interaction features, and not
so much please-exploit-me overcomplexity. Unfortunately it also has
less robustness -- a great thing to lack in a tool whose primary
use-case is to increase robustness -- which makes me wonder why I
bother.
