I hates splash-screens too. They're part of the pre-multitasking legacy of Windows <=3.x and Mac OS <=7. Yes, I know Windows 1.x and Mac OS 6.something had multitasking. These old systems just did it so badly, so you didn't really trust it enough to use. So you had to have *something* to look at while the app was loading, why not an ad? Other abominations surviving from that era: MDI (Windows 2.x used tiled windows, with overlapping windows only within an application), and "tool windows" or "tool panels" (hey, you can open multiple windows... you gotta use that feature even if it doesn't make sense, and without multitasking what else are you gonna do?). Now that there's no need (in a sense) for these tricks, you still have them because, well, they're tradition.
