Not having a notification mechanism so the system can tell apps when something relevant has happened is hateful. (Ideally, filesystem objects would be, well, that – objects, where the API would provide the “M” from MVC, and then you could actually write applications that behave sanely without leaking complexity into every damn freaking line of code that somehow deals with the filesystem.)
