I'll bet it's copying from the X clipboard and not the X selection.
Which is why it works when you explicitly Copy it to the clipboard
first.

I get the same problem copying from an X11 server (Exceed or
Xoftware, either) on Windows. It seems to be a standard problem
when trying to deal with the X11 schizo selection-vs-copy issue.
