Perl's $foo, @bar, %baz, and the umpteen different kinds of quoting, I can more or less excuse that kind of silliness in the shell because I watched it grow and each step was (kinda) logical at the time... but it's still hateful. Perl deliberately embraced that hatefulness as if it was a good idea rather than an undesirable side effect of the way the shell evolved.
