While I'm posting I think we've gone far enough now in identifying 
wishlist items (for the short term).  What we need now is go over this 
thread and produce a patch to TODO, followed by a quick bout of coding.

To save voulenteering someone I'll tackle the TODO list tonight on my 
way home and with luck commit it this evening, else it'll be tomorrow 
morning.
